Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. National History

In February of 1943, a group of women met at the Lewis Colege of Business (Lewis Business College) to discuss the need for an organization that would support and promote opportunities for young women who were striving for a better education.  To meet this need, Elizabeth Garner, an instructor at the College, assisted by her sister, Violet T. Lewis, owner and President of the Lewis College of Business, founded Gamma Phi Dleta Sorority with the following mission:

To improve the economic, social, and political stats of all women; to encourage our members to further their education/training and maintain a progressive interest in the values of humanity; to promote refinement and culture; to establish and maintain a better relationship among women of all races and creeds; to be of greater service to our community, our country, and to each other.

Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. is a sisterhood of distinguished, congenial business and professional women.  Through their talents and qualities, members aid and cultivate higher scholastic and ethical standards, provide social and recreational outlets, implement enrichment programs for the youth, and administer services to people in need.

Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. contributes annually to approved charitable organizations that are involved in serving humanity and whose objectives reflect our mission.  Our service to the community includes volunteer work in hospitals, nursing homes, public schools, tutoring, literacy, and programs for the elderly.  We offer support to the Red Cross, Little Red Door, the March of Dimes, Sickle Cell Anemia, GAINS, the Salvation Army and others.  We also support Ribbons for Africa.  Chapters collect “pocket change” and send these donations to Africa to support our sisters in the Motherland.
